If you’re a foreigner and wish to buy property in Italy, the codice fiscale (Italian tax code) is the first document you’ll need.
It’s a personal identification number used in all dealings with the Italian public administration and other institutions.
You’ll need it to buy a property, open a bank account, sign contracts, or handle any tax-related matters.
In recent years, the property market in Cagliari has become increasingly international. More and more foreign buyers are choosing to invest in or move to Sardinia, and one of the questions we’re most frequently asked as an estate agency is how to obtain the codice fiscale.
If you’re currently abroad
If you live outside Italy, you can obtain a codice fiscale without having to travel here.
You simply need to contact the Italian Consulate or Embassy in your town of residence.
Usually, you can:
complete the application form directly online via the Consulate’s website, and
receive your codice fiscale by email or post.
It’s always advisable to check the official website of your local Italian Consulate for up-to-date information on procedures and required documents.
If you’re already in Italy (and especially in Cagliari)
Once you’re in Italy, you can apply for the codice fiscale depending on your situation.
If you’re applying for a visa or residence permit
In this case, you can obtain your codice fiscale from either:
the Cagliari Police Headquarters (Questura, Via Amat Luigi Cardinale, 9, 09129 Cagliari CA), or the Immigration Office (Sportello Unico per l’Immigrazione, Via Giovanni Battista Venturi, 13, 09131 Cagliari CA).
Please visiti their website: https://questure.poliziadistato.it/it/servizio/orari/5730dc9d14fed007295896
During the process of issuing or renewing your residence permit, the codice fiscale is automatically generated.
To apply, you’ll need to present:
a valid ID document (passport or identity card), and
the application form for the codice fiscale, available on the Agenzia delle Entrate (Italian Revenue Agency) website or at their offices.
If you’re an EU citizen
EU citizens can apply directly at the Agenzia delle Entrate office.
In Cagliari, the relevant office is:
Agenzia delle Entrate – Direzione Provinciale di Cagliari “Pirri 2”, Via Cesare Pintus, Cagliari
We recommend booking an appointment and checking the official Agenzia delle Entrate website for the latest opening hours and application details. Here is the official website:
