When is the best time of year to visit Sardinia for buying a property or coming on holiday and what can I expect from the tourist season?
Sardinia has a mild short winter and a long hot dry summer and seems to experience a second spring in October when plants and flowers return from the summer heat.
The year-round good weather allows plenty of outdoor activities both on the coast and inland: from mountain biking in the wild hills to kite surfing in the crystal clear sea or simply relaxing on the warm sand of your favourite beach this makes the island suitable for year-round activities and even though much more popular during summer due to the amazing beaches there is growing out-of-season tourism devoted to activities like hiking and mountain biking.
The best times to view properties in Sardinia are the spring and autumn periods when temperatures are mild or pleasantly warm. March to June and September till the end of December are advisable.
Having said that even winter months of January and February can be warm and sunny if you get lucky.
We do not recommend viewings during August, it can be very hot and as this is the holiday period for most Italians, both agents and owners often down tools and are unavailable especially closer to the middle of August during Ferragosto (the main Italian national holiday).
If you want to combine house hunting with a beach holiday then June to July is a perfect time, with fewer tourists, cleaner beaches and warm clear water.
Sardinia is a very popular destination for tourists and offers different experiences depending on the season. Here’s an overview of the seasons and what to expect:
Spring (March-June) and Autumn (September – November):
Spring and autumn are excellent times to visit Sardinia if you want to avoid the summer crowds, the beaches are still quiet, ideal for long walks and picnics. The climate is mild and pleasant, with temperatures fluctuating between 15 °C and 20°C on average. In autumn temperatures are still pleasant, with an average between 20°C and 25°C. Spring is the best time to explore nature and go hiking in the countryside and mountains, as the Sardinian countryside is lush and full of flowers.
In autumn the beaches are less crowded than in summer, and the sea is warmer for swimming than in spring and early summer. Both spring and autumn are a good time to explore the Sardinian hinterland, visit archaeological sites and taste the local cuisine.
Peak Summer (July – August):
Summer is a high tourist season in Sardinia. Temperatures can exceed 30°C, making the beaches and crystal-clear waters of its coasts particularly inviting.
Coastal cities and beach resorts are crowded with tourists from all over the world. It’s the perfect time to enjoy water sports such as surfing, windsurfing and snorkelling.
As already mentioned, if you are planning a visit for house hunting then I would avoid August as this is peak season for tourists, many holiday homes will be being rented so not available for viewings and many agencies will be closed as this is the traditional holiday period for all Italians.
Ajò also operates as a Co-Host offering short term rental management services to home owners who rent out their holiday homes when not in use. If you are planning to buy a holiday home then our service can be invaluable especially if you are not living locally.
Winter (December – February):
Winter in Sardinia is mild, with temperatures usually not falling below 10°C. Although the days may be shorter and beach activities are not as popular, the island offers an authentic lifestyle experience on offer and it is possible to enjoy sports and outdoor activities, with fewer tourists and lower prices. It’s a great time to explore historic cities, visit museums, and enjoy traditional cuisine without the summer crowds.
In summary, choosing the best time to visit Sardinia depends on your personal preferences. If you prefer warmer temperatures and want to avoid crowds, spring and autumn might be the ideal times. If, however, you love the summer heat and the lively atmosphere of seaside resorts, summer is the right time for you.
